With spring somehow in full tilt in early March and the snowdrops already starting to wilt, what better time to take off the mouldy old coat of winter by going on a walk and enjoying the outdoors. Located near the village of Gifford in East Lothian is a beautifully packaged walk taking one through forests, farms and the perimeter of a long stretching reservoir. For the adventurous type the Lammermuir hills sit just on the horizon, and for those who like their creature comforts there is a cozy little farm shop (Carfrae Farm Shop) with a coffee bar and a fireplace to defrost beside.

The loop walk :
Conveniently, there is a small area to park near the entrance of this loop (highlighted below in red – excuse the primitive highlighting) so if you are driving in for a picnic you can walk unencumbered to the reservoir, or straight upwards towards the Carfrae Farm Shop.
The journey to the reservoir starts at the carpark and as you follow the red dotted line you will find a sheep path with turnstiles and a small river running towards fields of gorse. .
Once you reach the first yellow map point make sure to stay on the perimeter of the fields and out onto a single track road. Continue along the road and follow signs to Carfrae.

As you ascend the road you will see signs to the Carfrae Farm Shop. Follow the signs and you will be met with coffee made with fresh local milk, delicious sweet treats and lots of locally-sourced produce. If you happen upon the shop in winter there is a snug stone house with a roaring fire where you can sit, unwind and eat your cake.
